Ultraman UK

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

I am pleased to announce I am the first official entrant into Ultraman UK for September 3-5, 2011.  I am excited and honored to be a participant in this event.  I thought after Ultraman Canada I was done with this type of event for personal and professional reasons but after taking a year off to ponder my future, I realized that racing is a part of who I am to do what I do professionally and I choose to continue on.

Our 5th Annual golf outing is approaching on Aug 20 and it a total blast for those involved.  It illustrates you can have fun and not have to drink during it.

The 9th Annual Racing for Recovery 5k, 10k run walk is set for Oct 24 and our 7th Annual Racing for Recovery Triathlon is set for June 5, 2011.  Please support us in any capacity you can.

I finished doing Half Ironman Racine recently and enjoyed the highs of participating and crossing the finish line.  It was a pleasure to have many people recognize Racing for Recovery and I appreciated their kind words.

Our new movie Running with Demons is going through the 4th version and we hope to have DVD’s available to the world by our 5k on October 24.

Life is awesome but yet tough along the way.  I am proud to say I have remained sober since April 15, 1993 and will continue to do so until the day I die.  I am not perfect and have made bad choices that have resulted in alot of turmoil in my life.  I own those mistakes and take full responsibility for my choices but I did not nor will I choose drugs to deal with them.  That is what is what living a sober life consists of and that is what I am all about.  I am making progress on dealing with my own issues because I want to constantly improve my life in the holistic manner that I believe in.

Peace to you and yours and as always “With Sobriety Anything is Possible”

5th Annual Racing for Recovery Golf Outing

Friday, June 11th, 2010

Hello and thanks to everyone who supported the Racing for Recovery Triathlon on June 6.  As usual with everything this program does, we put on an amazing event that shared our message of HOPE.  This is not possible without the support of volunteers and 3D Racing and I appreciate both to make this happen.  I also want to thank the participants for choosing our race and congratulate you all for completing your race.

Next up is our 5th Annual golf outing on Aug 20 at Giants Oaks golf course.  Contact me at racing4recovery@aol.com for an entry form, donations or sponsorship.  This is a great day of fun and laughter.

Enjoy  the life that not using drugs has provided.

June 6 Racing for Recovery Triathlon

Monday, May 10th, 2010

THANK YOU to everyone who came out to support the first screening of Running with Demons this past Saturday.  We had 400 people in the audience and the feedback has been great.  We are looking forward to reviewing all the reviews and “tweaking” the movie to the final version which will be available on DVD this fall.  The plan now is to get in some additional screenings in various cities first.

Our next event is our 6th Annual triathlon on June 6 at Sterling Park in Monroe, Michigan.  We are in need of volunteers to support over 350 participants.  You will receive food and a t- shirt along with motivation for your support.

I am doing a tremendous amount of counseling which is where my heart lies.  I have not done a triathlon since last August and have enjoyed the break and focusing on other areas of my life.  I will participate in Ironman Cozumel in November as I am looking forward to relaxing and enjoying a little relaxation.

Peace to you all and “with sobriety anything is possible”

Todd’s thirteen-year struggle with drugs and alcohol nearly destroyed his life, devastating

relationships with family and friends, and shattering the promise of a professional hockey career. In the process of rebuilding his life, Todd established Racing for Recovery in 2001. Now clean and sober since 1993, Todd has been featured on ESPN Sports Center, and participates in Ironman and Ultraman races, the most grueling sport imaginable, to inspire others on their road to sobriety. Todd is the only person in the world to complete the 2008 Ultraman Hawaii Triathlon, and six days later complete Ironman Western Australia. The Ultraman is a three-day test of endurance consisting of 6.2 miles of swimming and 90 miles of biking (day 1), 171.2 miles of biking (day 2) and 52.4 miles of running (day 3).  In 2009, Todd also completed Ultraman Canada, and became one of twenty-five individuals in the world to have completed both Ultraman Triathlons.

Todd Crandell, PC, LCDC III

Todd’s own 13-year struggle with drugs and alcohol nearly destroyed his life, devastating relationships with family and friends and shattering the promise of a professional hockey career. He quit using drugs and alcohol on April 15, 1993, and has been sober ever since.

In the process of rebuilding his life, Todd realized traditional recovery programs weren’t enough. He needed something more. He chose the most grueling sport imaginable, the Ironman Triathlon – 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, 26.2 mile run. Todd ran his first triathlon in 1999 and has never stopped.

He has completed eighteen full-length Ironman Triathlons across the world. In 2008, he was the only person in the world to complete the Ultraman Hawaii Triathlon and then, six days later complete Ironman Western Australia. The Ultraman is a 3 day test of endurance consisting of 6.2 miles of swimming and 90 miles of biking (day 1), 171.2 miles of biking (day 2) and 52.4 miles of running (day 3). In 2009, Todd completed Ultraman Canada, and became one of twenty-five individuals in the world to have completed both Ultraman Triathlons.

In 2001, his experience with running these triathlon events and inspiring others on their road to

sobriety led him to form the organization Racing for Recovery®.

Racing for Recovery® sponsors support meetings and race events across the United States in an effort to promote a lifestyle of fitness and sobriety. Todd Crandell regularly speaks to groups and individuals to convey one important message: With Sobriety Anything Is Possible.

Todd and Racing for Recovery® have been featured on CNN, FOX, ABC, CBS, and NBC News, ESPN’s SportsCenter, ESPN2’s Cold Pizza, The New York Times, Sports Illustrated.com, Runner’s World and Triathlete Magazines, the nationally-syndicated Mitch Albom Radio Show, and a number of other radio, newspaper and magazine interviews across the United States and throughout the world.

Crandell’s book, From Addict to Ironman, co-written with John Hanc, gives an unflinching account of his addiction and recovery and has motivated thousands in their fight to overcome drug and alcohol addiction.

Todd holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business from Lourdes College and a Master of Counseling

degree from Spring Arbor University. Todd is also a PC (Professional Counselor) and LCDC III

(Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor III).

He is a resident of Sylvania, Ohio, along with his wife, Melissa, their two sons, Konor and Mason, and daughters Skylar and Madison, where he also trains for the triathlon competitions.

Sponsors include Blue Seventy Wetsuits, Wicked Fast Sports Nutrition, Griffen Bikes, DeSoto

Acceptance and limits

Sunday, February 14th, 2010

I was schedule to run 100 miles yesterday in a race that has the option to run 50 or 62.  After running 25 miles I decided I was only going to do 50 and a big sense of relief came over me.

The words acceptance and limits with respect to the physical activities finally came to a head.  Just like on April 15, 1993 I accepted that I could no longer live with drugs and wanted a better way of life, well yesterday I finally realized that with running.  I accepted the fact that A. I did not want to run 100 miles and B was content with my decision.  I could have struggled and suffered like the others out there but I chose not to put myself through that type of pain any longer.  I have done it time and time again and feel I have proven my physical capabilities to others and more importantly to myself.

I am “preaching” a message of taking care of yourself in all areas of your life and I realized that if I am out there punishing myself just to say “ya I did that” and I am not living what I am “preaching”  I have never said exercise is the most important thing in my life but I have said and do say it is imperative to stay physically active.  Here is my issue, I miss being active on a daily basis and enjoying running my 6, 8 or 10 miles a day just for the benefits running provides.  I am spending to much time tapering for the event and recovering after.  I ripped a toe nail completely off yesterday so again it will be time before I can get going again.

I called my parents last night and said I only ran the 50 and you would have thought I had won the lottery.  My mom said “I am so proud of you for not doing the 100.  I have to tell you that made me feel really good.

I am not retiring from this lifestyle in any capacity I am doing it in a healthy and productive way which will enable me to enjoy the benefits for a longer period of time.

Ok I am pretty beat up and just want to relax, reflect on the blessings I have and enjoy some solitude.

Peace to all and Happy Valentines Day

Good Lord It has been awhile

Monday, February 8th, 2010

Hey all,

Sorry it has taken me so long to post anything new here as I am constantly updating 3 Facebook pages and a Twitter page.

Here is the latest.  Racing for Recovery is presenting Running with Demons on May 8 here in Sylvania, Ohio.  Ticket information is here https://www.vendini.com/ticket-software.html?e=de6371e9ef7457eb75d7382ebd2524cc&t=tix.  If you can’t attend, please purchase 2 tickets and donate them back to us so we can utilize them for local rehabs.

Taxes are complete for 2009 and we are currently applying for grants to help fund our worthy program.

I am getting ready to run my first 100 miler this weekend http://ironhorse100kmclub.com/.  I have a pretty good idea of what is in store for me both good and bad but it is what I do.

Thanks to Fremont Parks and Recreation Center who implemented an indoor 10k yesterday which 80 people participated.  Racing for Recovery was the benefactor of the entry fees which resulted in $1260.00 for our program.

June 6 is the 6th Annual Racing for Recovery Half and Sprint Triathlon and we look forward to putting on another amazing event .

I am continuing to counsel as many people as possible and completely enjoy this aspect of my “job”.  I have worked very hard to be educated and licensed in this field.  I am 2 classes away from having my license valid through 2013.  If you are looking for a speaker and counselor to help in any capacity I am proud to say I am the “real deal” on many levels.

Enjoy your day and thanks for your support.

Thanksgiving & other R4R business

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

Just wanted to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving with their friends and families.  We all have a lot to be thankful for.

Ok where to begin.  Let me start by saying yesterday Melissa and I took Mason to his school play.  This was the last Thanksgiving play at the pre-school all of our friends have attended and it made me realize our kids are really growing up.  I want to maintain the staying in the moment vibe with all of them as life is too short to not be totally involved in the growing up process.me red jacket nh

My weeks worth of speaking gigs and implementing a Racing for Recovery support group meeting in New Hampshire was awesome.  The film crew from Running with Demons was there and shot some footage of me doing speaking gigs.  Speaking of Running with Demons, the premiere is Saturday May, 8 here in Sylvania, Ohio at Tam O Shanter.  This is where I grew up playing hockey and of course it is local to my community.  More information will be coming on this soon.

Running has been going well lately.  I completed the Detroit Marathon 3:55 my best time and the this past Sunday completed the Philadelphia Marathon in 3:43.  I need to do a 3:20 now to qualify for Boston.  God the people that can run that fast have my utmost respect.  Next up is the Vegas Marathon Dec 6.

On the Educational front I am continuing to take CEU classes to maintain my PC and LCDC licenses and will have all my credits done a year before they are due.  In March I should know if I am accepted into the Ph.D of Psychology program at Bowling Green State University.  God willing I will be able to pursue this degree.

I am also doing the Love Dare.  If you have not seen the movie Fireproof watch it.  I am doing this with the same effort I put into everything else I do which is 100 percent.

Enjoy your day.

8th Annual R4R 5k 10k & Edmonton

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

Hello from Edmonton Alberta where I am doing 4 speaking engagements.  Yesterday I spoke at DACSAW (Drug and Alcohol Council For Safe Alberta Workplaces and today I am at Harry Ainlay High School where my buddy Darwin Holt is a teacher.  I am thankful to be here and grateful to be staying at Darwins  house instead of a hotel.  Hotel will be next week is in New Hampshire.  I throughly enjoy sharing my story and the Racing for Recovery message and witnessing that mission impact other lives.

Our 8th Annual Racing for Recovery 5k 10k run/walk this past Sunday was once again awesome.  It is amazing to think we have been putting this worthy event on for 8 years now and this year was the best.  It is a ton of work and requires support from many people and I appreciate all who made this event possible.

I have been enjoying simply running lately and was happy to finally break a sub 4 hour marathon with a 3:55 in Detroit.  I have entered the Antartica Marathon for 2013 (yes it is sold out until then) and after completing that race I will have run a marathon on all 7 continents.  In the overall importance of life who cares but it is another notch on my racing achievements.

My daughter Skylar won her soccer tournament this past weekend.  I love watching my kids play sports and I am proud of all they do.

Anyone out there that does PR and would like to work with Racing for Recovery?  Let me know at toddcrandell@racingforrecovery.com.

Off to speak then going to the Oilers and Red Wings game tonight.  Life is good eh?  Know why I get to do what I do?  Because I do not do drugs anymore and I am doing my best to help others do the same.

Sydney Australia

DSC00450Back home from finishing the Sydney Australia Marathon and also doing 3 worthy speaking engagements for the benefit of kids who come from broken homes.  This was the true reason I was there and that is to share my message of HOPE to those battling addictions, running the marathon was awesome but second in my priorities.  I had a blast traveling with my friend Stevin Groth who has lost 100 pounds has taken up running to do so.  Thanks to James Short and David Gray for making it all happen.DSC00403

Getting ready for the 8th Annual Racing for Recovery 5k, 10k on October 25.  I truly hope this community I live in supports this worthy event.  Keep in mind people alcohol and drug addiction cost the American economy 276 billion dollars a year in lost productivity so anything that can be done to prevent addiction in kids is well worth it.DSC00431

We have a brand new sponsorship kit and if you are interested in supporting us, please email me at Racing4recovery@aol.com.  New York Life has donated $2800.00 that helps to put on the 5k so thank you to Jeff and Kim King along with the gang at New York Life for supporting us.DSC00446

Going to run the Detroit Marathon on Oct 18 and also have speaking engagements in Michigan, New York, Edmonton Canada and New Hampshire coming up.  I love my life and have everything I need.  How did I get to where I am?  I stopped drinking on April 15, 1993.

Enjoy your day.
